Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a speaking event organizer. She created Feminist Frequency which is a website that features videos and comments analyzing the portrayals of females in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critic. Feminist Frequency - a not-for profit website that focuses on female representations in popular culture narratives - is created and directed by Sarkeesian. Aiming to dispel the myths of women that exist in pop culture, she also works with issues that relate to the targeted harassment women and other classes of people online. Sarkeesian has a degree in social thought and politics at York University. She is also a highly-respected public presenter. Sarkeesian gave speeches to the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group. While a student at university she became fascinated by the issue of gender identity and women's rights from a young age. The site was created by a woman in her early 20s who wanted to create an online series which would explore gender roles in video games. However, she became the victim of online harassment. This attack didn't stop her, rather it strengthened her determination as feminist media critic. She is a recipient of several awards for her contributions to feminism. Anita Sarkeesian, a media critic, has been awarded numerous awards and created Feminist Frequency as an educational nonprofit that studies the way women are depicted in popular culture narratives.
